He did notice that his hair wouldn't lay down straight, and that the collar of his black undershirt shirt kept drooping down his neck. It was only mildly irritating, at first. He brushed his hair down with his hands, pulled his collar up, and kept reading his paper. His hair kept falling in that weird position regardless, and the back of his shirt wouldn't stay in place either. When had it gotten so loose?

Eventually, it bothered Sanzo enough that he got up and changed his shirt, only to find that the shirt he changed into was doing the same thing. It annoyed him, so he gave up trying to read his paper and went out for a smoke instead.

He's got his back to the wall for now, but anyone who catches a glimpse of the ink on the nape of Sanzo's neck will clearly be able to read the name Cho Hakkai.

Goku frowns. Hakkai without his limiters was a scary sight. If he couldn't get a door down in that state, then the doors were indestructible, just like Sanzo says.

"...then how'd you know that was the only way? I mean, why would anyone wanna get you to have sex and stuff?"

Goku understands what sex is, but doesn't quite have a grasp on sexual perversions that might have been the motivator for such locked rooms.
Aug. 17th, 2010 02:18 am (UTC)
"I knew because Hakkai told me about the place before I went there."

Although, the fact that Hakkai couldn't get out wasn't the scariest thing about it.

"And how should I know why someone would do something like that? Probably because the place is run by a bunch of perverted bastards."
Aug. 17th, 2010 02:26 am (UTC)
"You said with Hakkai it was different," Goku says, still looking rather upset by the whole thing. Sanzo says no one forced him to do anything, but it sure doesn't sound that way to Goku. He doesn't think Sanzo wanted to do those things to get out of the locked room, which by definition means he was forced.
Aug. 17th, 2010 02:38 am (UTC)
"It was."

Sanzo can't believe he's explaining all of this. He knows that Goku doesn't like it. Sanzo doesn't want to talk about it either, but it's not like he can do anything about that now. If he doesn't say anything, then Goku will just keep asking questions.

"That happened awhile ago. We were both stuck in this stupid place that forces you to live with strangers and brainwashes you if you do anything they don't like."
Aug. 17th, 2010 02:44 am (UTC)
"What do you mean 'brainwashed'?" That didn't sound any more promising than being in a locked room that forces you to have sex with people. (Though the living with strangers bit didn't seem all that bad - once you got to know someone, they weren't strangers anymore).

"Like what happened to Kougaiji?"

That had been a freaky experience. Kougaiji was not himself at all. The thought that Sanzo could end up that way is not a pleasant one.
Aug. 17th, 2010 02:55 am (UTC)
"No, not like that. When you're brainwashed there you just act like you're happy to be there and it's normal."

It's not all that different from how Hakkai usually is, which is kinda creepy in it's own right. "Gojyo was never in that place, and you were... gone. So Hakkai and I were both pissed off about it." Actually they were sad and lonely, but Sanzo can't express any emotion other than anger.
Aug. 17th, 2010 03:51 am (UTC)
"Oh." Goku can tell that Sanzo hasn't been brainwashed, but he looks intently into Sanzo's eyes as though he wants to make sure of it. After a long moment, he's satisfied that what he sees is the Sanzo he knows, and he relaxes a little.

"Guess that's why I haven't seen you at all at the place I've been. But I always thought that you were still in Shangri-la," he says, frowning.

Goku had been all by himself, in the place he'd been sent to. Of course he'd been lonely, but he consoled himself in the knowledge that at least the others weren't stuck there like he was. It makes him angry to think that Sanzo and the others were just sent to place even more horrible.
Aug. 17th, 2010 04:04 am (UTC)
Oh, believe me, if Sanzo had been brainwashed by that place, Goku would know. Sanzo would be smiling, for one thing.

"There are a lot of people here from a lot of different places, but I haven't been in Shangri-la for... probably almost two years now."

And he's not happy about it either. He can't go west here, or find his master's scripture here. There's nothing to do in this place and he feels useless. He wants to go back.
Aug. 19th, 2010 11:52 pm (UTC)
"Two years?" Goku stares at him with surprise. "But I just saw you a few weeks ago." He scratches his head, wondering whether there's some kind of trick going on here. He was definitely in Shangri-la the last time he saw Sanzo. And actually, he does remember...

"You were...shooting at somebody. I was attacked...I never saw the guy." His eyes widen. "I was...dying."
Aug. 20th, 2010 12:01 am (UTC)
That earns you a frown. Sanzo does not want to hear about Goku dying, not after what happened to the monkey that was stuck in that other place with him.

But he doesn't want to talk about that either, so he's not saying anything.
Aug. 20th, 2010 02:49 am (UTC)
"Oh, don't worry, I was okay," Goku says with a reassuring grin. "I guess that's kinda obvious, heh." After all - he's still alive, though not without a little help from his darker side. He'd summoned powers he never knew he commanded, and had healed himself with chi - like Hakkai, except the energy had come from the earth itself. He only remembers this because he dreamed it, just before he woke up in that strange world. His dream had ended there, and he doesn't remember anything else.

His grin fades a little as he casts his gaze down at his open palm.

"I don't remember much after that though."
Aug. 20th, 2010 04:29 am (UTC)
"Idiot. You shouldn't say things like that."

Sanzo sounds annoyed, but he's really relieved. It doesn't matter how Goku survived, or whether he remembers it or not.

"If you're still alive, that's all that matters."
Aug. 20th, 2010 01:05 pm (UTC)
"What? Of course I'm alive! I'm here, aren't I?" Goku spreads his arms out in a gesture that seems to say see? Now, they've seen people who'd come back from the dead before, but those people always smelled different. As far as Goku could tell, he didn't smell like death like they did.

"Hehe. Besides, I can't die before you, Sanzo." He smiles. He can't very well be by his side til the end, if he died first.
Aug. 20th, 2010 04:45 pm (UTC)
Sanzo's seen people come back from the dead too, but they don't always smell dead here. He's seen people like Kanan and Master Koumyou, both as alive as they had ever been just before they died. And Goku has already been taken away from Sanzo before, but Goku can't be dead. He just can't.

"That's right, you can't. Because if you did, then I'd have to kill you."

Never mind that you'd already be dead. Sanzo would find a way to track you down and kill you a second time.
Aug. 21st, 2010 03:28 am (UTC)
"Hehe. Yeah I know." Goku laughs, because that's just the sort of reply he'd expect from Sanzo. He's missed that sarcastic humor, and the obvious underlying warmth in Sanzo's words. There were nice enough people in that world he was sent to, friendly and supportive, but no one will ever be Sanzo.
